July Newsletter from ACHM! Winter in Matabeleland

Winter greetings from ACHM! Visiting us during the cold but clear winter season in June and July offers a captivating experience. The region's bush, which typically flourishes during the wet season, dries and thins out during winter, providing a remarkable advantage on observing the breathtaking landscape and wildlife. The sparser or at least thinning vegetation creates unobstructed views, making it easier to spot elephants, lions, antelopes and all the other forms of wildlife we are priviledged to live amongst. Moreover, the game is drawn to water sources that become scarce in the arid season, giving us a huge advantage regionally at Dimbangombe Conservancy given that our management does improve the water cycle, attracting wildlife from around the region

Navigating Political Pressures: Nonprofits in Zimbabwe
ACHM is a non profit organisation, registered as a ‘Private Voluntary Organisation’ in Zimbabwe, which means that any income retained is invested in our local communities, foremost the 5 Cheifdoms of our region, and into the wider KAZA Region.

Nonprofits in play a vital role in addressing social and economic challenges in Zimbabwe. Operating in a politically charged environment poses unique obstacles. This post explores how nonprofits in Zimbabwe navigate political pressures, ensuring their impact and sustainability.
Zimbabwe's political landscape is particularly volatile, challenging nonprofits. Political pressures manifest as restrictive legislation, limited civic space, and sometimes government interference. We, as a non profit, have to seek to address societal needs while maintaining independence and avoiding political entanglements.
Nonprofits prioritize transparency, accountability, and ethical practices to build trust and reduce political interference. Collaboration with local and international organizations amplifies their impact and protects their interests. Partnerships leverage resources, knowledge, and advocacy power, increasing resilience against political pressures.
We strategically advocate for policy reforms and engage with stakeholders, including the government and civil society. Evidence-based research provides a foundation for constructive dialogue and influencing policy decisions. Involving local communities through capacity building and inclusive decision-making fosters ownership and resilience, strengthening sustainability and building social capital. Our Flagship CFTP courses which we run several times a year take a deep dive into these aspects. The next one we are scheduling in the middle of October, for anyone interested!
Nonprofits rely on international support, including funding, technical assistance, and capacity-building programs. This support enhances effectiveness and helps navigate complex political environments, minimizing vulnerability to political interference.
Nonprofits in Zimbabwe face significant challenges while striving to address social and economic issues amid political pressures. Strategies focused on transparency, collaboration, advocacy, and community engagement empower them to overcome obstacles and make a lasting impact. International support further strengthens their resilience. Despite the challenges, Zimbabwe's nonprofit sector remains committed to driving positive change and contributing to community well-being.
