June 2023

Our June 2023 newsletter
We hope you all have done your
non-growing season gazing plan?
Winter is upon us and temperatures have started to fall dramatically on theconservancy. We are seeing clues to the drying of the veld, with plenty ofwildlife around the semi-permanent water bodies and an increase predatoractivity in the area as well. We have seen a dramatic increase in lionencounters with the herd in the last few weeks, uncharacteristically high. Weare still trying to understand why?
Our grazing planning for the dry (non-growing) season is what gets the grassseed bed ready for the coming rains and growing season. This planning iscritical in our brittle environment. We did a deep dive into the brittlenessscale, a key Holistic Management insight. we will link that below.
Understanding the difference between the tool of grazing and the tool of animal’s impact is key to enabling the nutrient cycling within a brittle environment and how it connects to recovery and the tool of rest (partial and total). We share a little video about how we change our herds behaviour to enable these two different tools. Especially in our environment when so much of national parks, communal lands and conventional cattle ranches are both over grazed and rested at the same time.

We recently trained 10 people from the Grevy’s Zebra trust, from the Northern Counties of Kenya. They were great and we look forward to continuing our support of this region of northern Kenya.
